MS found bound into front of a copy of vol. 1 of Franchet & Savatier (1875-9). The Julian calendar was used in Russia until 1917; 12 days need to be added to arrive at the Gregorian date that provides the basis for the numbering of the letter.

In Erwiederung Ihres Schreibens vom 5/5 das mir so eben zugegangen, das Folgende: Die Bemerkungen über Elaeagnus Kologa sind von C. Salomon, der kaum in dieser Beziehung ganz sicher ist und nur nach De Candolle geht.
Die Elaeagnus hat C. Maximowicz in der 8ten Decade (pag. 558) seiner neuen Pflanzen Japans und der Mandschurei, welche Maximowicz Ihnen seiner Zeit auch gesendet hat.
Zu E. latifolia L. zieht Maximowicz E. arborea Roxbrg, E. conferta Roxbrg, E. Thwaitesi Schlechtd., E. Kaloga Schlechtd., E. ferruginea Rich. u. E. Wallichiana Schlechtd..
Zu E. umbellata Thbg stellt er E. parvifolia Roxbrg als Synonym, - und von E. longipes A. Gray (wozu Maximowicz E. crispa u. E. multiflora als Synonyme zieht), führt er eine Form als α hortensis mit grossen essbaren Früchten auf. Doch Sie werden ja diese kurze Abhandlung von Maximowicz selbst haben.

Regel was the editor of Gartenflora, in which, in vol. 28 (1879), p. 11, the notes on E. kologa appear in 'Bemerkungen über verschiedene ältere und neuere Freilandgehölze', pp. 10-16, signed "(C. S.)".
who is hardly very reliable in this respect, as he just repeats De Candolle.
Elaeagnus was treated by C. Maximowicz in the 8th decade (page 558) of his new plants of Japan and Manchuria,

which Maximowicz sent to you at the time.

There is a reprint of Maximowicz's paper in the Library, Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne, inscribed: 'Illo viro F. Müller auctor' [To F. Müller from the author].
Maximowicz unites E. arborea Roxb., E. conferta Roxb., E. thwaitesii Schlechtd., E. kologa Schlechtd., E. ferruginea Rich. and E. wallichiana Schlechtd. under E. latifolia L.
He places E. parvifolia Roxb. as synonym under E. umbellata Thunb., and under E. longipes A. Gray (into which Maximowicz places E. crispa and E. multiflora as synonyms) he lists a form as α hortensis with large edible fruit. But you will have this short paper by Maximowicz yourself.
