Letter not found. For the extract given here, see B79.09.01. The item is headed 'Le
Phylloxera en Australie' [Phylloxera in Australia] and signed 'J. E. P.'. It is introduced
1879, les lignes suivantes' [The papers having spoken vaguely several times of the
presence of phylloxera in Australia, I wanted to have precise information in this
regard, and I wrote for this to my colleague and friend Baron Ferdinand von Mueller,
director of the Melbourne Botanic Garden, who writes as follows under the date 5 July
1879].
Your tracts on phylloxera have so much the more interest for us because this wretched
parasite invaded our territory 3 years ago. It nevertheless seems that the rooting
up and burning of the sick vines in the Geelong and Sandhorst
districts would have prevented this pestilence from spreading and one begins to hope
that the evil will be completely extirpated from the country.

alas!, that that this optimistic hope will be, in Australia as elsewhere, but an initial
illusion. Nevertheless, one cannot but approve the course followed in this recent
and circumscribed case of invasion].
