Da am heutigen Tage eine Extrapost (pr "Northumberland"[)] für Europa schliesst, so sende ich Ihnen, mein biederer Freund, einige Zeilen, um Sie zu benachrichtigen, dass es mir endlich gelungen ist, einen erwachsenen ♂ Dromeius zu erlangen, wohl conservirt. Die Schwierigkeit bestand darin, dass sich die Füsse der Emus so schwer austrocknen u. conserviren lassen, da Fäulniss nicht leicht zu vermeiden ist, ehe die Austrocknung vollendet, und antiseptische Beizungen die Schuppung der Oberhaut zerstören. Beharrlichkeit hat denn endlich auch nach Jahren von Mühen u. Kosten-Aufwand auch in diesem Falle zum Ziel geführt. Unter den andern Gegenständen die Sie hauptsächlich für Ihr Museum wünschten, habe ich denn auch ein gutes Exemplar von Cereopsis erlangt. Es liegen denn auch einige Arachniden von Westaustralien zurecht, sowie Fische von der Königs George's Bai, wo ich versuchen lasse, wenigstens einen Theil der zerstörten Arten wieder herstellen zu lassen.

Die Kiste wird alsbald an Hr. Dr. Sonder, unsern braven Freund, befördert werden; sollte er solche nicht öffnen, so bitte ich Sie, die ihm zugedachten darin befindlichen oceanischen Algen zu kommen zu lassen. Da Sie stets so wohlwollend an meinem Geschick Theil nahmen so muss ich Ihnen doch sagen, was vielleicht in deutschen Kreisen nicht weit bekannt wird, dass Ihre Maj. die Königin Victoria mich an Ihrem letzten Geburtstage (24 Mai) zum Commandeur des St. Michael u. St. George Ordens erhoben, eine ebenso überraschende als hohe Auszeichnung, die bisher keinem deutschen Naturforscher zu Theil wurde. Ich war ganz gerührt über diese unerwartete Güte vom Throne Englands, u. bin noch im Strudel der Aufregung inmitten der Felicitationen die von so vielen Seiten einlaufen.

Es würde mich freuen, wenn ich einen Abdruck von irgend einem Aufsatz bekommen könnte, der Bezug auf meine Sammlung hat.

Since an extra post for Europe (per Northumberland) closes today, I am sending you, my worthy Friend, some lines to inform you that I have at last succeeded in getting you a well preserved adult ♂ Dromeius. The difficulty consisted in that the feet of emus are so hard to dry out and preserve, because putrefaction is not easy to avoid before the drying out is completed; and antiseptic pickling destroys the scaliness of the epidermis. Persistence has then finally led to the goal after years of effort and expenditure, even in this case. Among the other objects that you chiefly desired for your museum, I have also obtained a good specimen of Cerioposis. There stand ready also some arachnids from Western Australia, as well as fishes from King Georges Bay, where I have tried to have at least a part of the destroyed species restored again.

The box will be consigned straight away to Dr Sonder, our worthy friend; should he not open it, I ask you to send the marine algae found therein intended for him. Since you always so willingly participate in my destiny, I must indeed tell you what perhaps is not widely known in German circles, that Her Majesty Queen Victoria has raised me on her last birthday (24 May) to Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George,

M had been appointed a Companion in the order in 1869; in 1879 he was appointed to Knight Commander (KCMG).

a decoration as high as it is surprising, which previously was not awarded to any German natural scientist. I was quite touched about this unexpected kindness from the throne of England, and I am still in a whirl of excitement in the midst of felicitations that come in from so many sides.

I should be pleased if I could get a reprint of any article that has reference to my collection.
