Letter not found. For the text given here, see Magyar növénytani lapok , vol. 3, no. 32 (August 1879), pp. 113-4 (B79.08.02). As explained in the accompanying text, Meltzl passed M's letter, which was originally written in German, to the editor of the journal, Ágost Kanitz, who with his friend Victor Janka was prompted to organize a ceremony to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the naming by Endlicher of the genus Brassaia in honour of Meltzl's colleague, the Hungarian scientist and scholar Sámuel Brassai (1797?-1897). The text is headed: 'Levél a Brassaia és genusokról. Irta: Baron Ferdinand von Mueller, MD., C.M.G., FRS., FLS.' [Letter about the genera Brassaia and , from Baron Ferdinand von Mueller, MD., C.M.G., FRS., FLS]. It is accompanied by the letter of invitation to the ceremony and a list of those invited.
A tropikus vonalon is aligha túl lép.
A Brassaia genus a tropikus övbeli keleti vidékek más tartományaiban is messzire elterjeszti az ön venerabilis barátja nevét. Igy pl.
FitzAlan magas fának irja le, mint a mely Molle szigetén terem, a mit én "Report on the plants of the Burdekin River" c. könyvemben a 11. l. feljegyeztem. További ismertetést lelhetni az én "Fragment. Phytogr. Austral. II. 108-109.; Seeman Hederaceae 8-10. (fametszettel).

There is a footnote at this point by the editor of the journal, Ágost Kanitz: 'C. B. Clarke a J. D. Hooker Flora of British India II. 782. K. [C. B. Clarke in J. D. There is a further footnote by Kanitz at this point: 'Miután C. B. Clarke újabb időben több fajt írt le, a -ok száma bizonyosan több mint nyolc, de miután Hooker említett mũvének eddig megjelent füzetében ezen nem tárgyalása nincs bevégezve, fajainak számat nem mondhatjuk határozottan meg. Hooker (Bot. Magaz. 4804), egynek Dr. Wallich (Plant. Asiatic. Rariores t. 190) adták a képét.

There is another footnote by Kanitz at this point: 'Az említett két mũ alig lesz meg máshol Magyarországon, mint Haynald bibornok könyvtárában. Különben a glomerulata Bl. egy csinos rajza látható Regels Gartenflora XII. 411 l. K.' [The two works mentioned above are unlikely to be found in Hungary except in the Library of Cardinal Haynald. In addition, a pretty picture of the glomerulata Bl. can be found in Regel's Gartenflora XII. p. 411].

Noble Sir!
I was very pleased today to get the letter from Prof. Strong
5
H. A. Strong?
in which he asked me to inform you about the Australian Brassaias with which Endlicher, your revered early-deceased colleague, honoured Mr Brassai. The venerable gentleman will be pleased to learn that I already years ago brought this huge plant, , into Australia. One of the plants, with such beautiful leaves, has been in my palmhouse (the first in Australia) since 1859. Endlicher described this species in the Novarum stripium decades in 1839,

Endlicher & Fenzl (1839), pp. 89-90.
and soon after this he published Bauer's illustrations of it in his Iconographia Tab. 114 -116.
7
M appears to be quoting from Endlicher (1836-40), p. 1415, where this reference is given to plates in Endlicher (1838), which was issued in parts between 1837 and 1841. It included plates by Ferdinand Bauer, and others, but the citation in Endlicher (1836-40) does not specify the artist. Moreover, Fosberg (1973) points out that the parts that contained those plates had not been issued when the reference was published in 1840, and that when they were issued in March 1841 the plates were of completely different plants and no plate of Brassaia appears anywhere in the volume.
The illustration of the whole plant is according to the ninth plate of Flinders' Voyage.

Flinders (1814).
The plant was also found by Banks and Solander in the area where Cook's ship was repaired in a tropical part of eastern Australia now famous for its many forests and mountains,

but it does not cross the coastal mountains and cannot be found in the dry western part or in the inland. It is unlikely to appear beyond the tropical zone.
The genus Brassaia spreads your friend's venerable name far away to other territories of the eastern part of the tropical zone. For example the B. macrostachya named by Dr. Seeman, our compatriot who passed away very early, is growing in New Guinea (see my book Papuan plants, p. 89).

B. Sessilis is a Dutch-Indies species, and once the forests on the mountains and hills in Sumatra, Borneo and Papua are thoroughly investigated, I'm sure other species of Brassaia will be found.
Dr. Leichardt – who disappeared 31 years ago and has still not been found, his bones whitening unburied in the desert until now – in his book written about his famous journey described with great joy the red flower of B. actionophylla.

Leichhardt (1847); probably the species that Leichhardt suggested might be a new Sciadophyllum, which 'attracted the attention of my companions as much by its ornamental foliage as its numerous terminal racemes of bright scarlet coloured flowers' (pp. 251-2).
FitzAlan decribed it as a tall tree growing on Molle Island.

The name of your venerable friend is preserved with honour by some species of , a genus akin to
