My dear Baron,
I have only time to enclose a paper respecting the fig which I made out where I got
your letter.
I have seen this fig (I suppose the same)
much higher
,
up the river. You will perceive 2 fruit larger than the rest; There is one on the
tree still larger but only half ripe. If you wish, I will send you the Dendrobium
monophyllum by first opportunity — but it is out of flower.

The AVH record (accessed 9 September 2023) includes a 'Field note' with a diagram that may have been enclosed with the letter. The text of the note is
You can make my 100 ft into upwards of 80. That is the length of the tree - as it
leans out over the strand. In actual perpendicular height it is of course much less.
But if measured from D. its length would be about what i said first. The mistake i
made, in stepping to get the length of the long limb was in not halting under A. I
measured on to under B. 75 ft and thought i had the measurement of the Branch AC.
- The fruit is nearly all gone but a few of a second crop coming - No 3. is from another
tree of same, but erect, and about 80 feet.
With best wishes I am, My dear Baron
yrs truly
