Es mag für Sie von Interesse sein, edler Herr, dass sich die Fabel über die geschwänzten Menschen auf eine sehr einfache Weise zu erklären scheint. Mr. Goldie, welcher neuerdings ins Innere von Neu Guinea eindrang, hat ermittelt, dass einige der Stämme dort sich zur Zierath einen künstlich nachgeahmten Schwanz anlegen, was mit manchen andern Ideen dieser Wilden in Einklang steht: Eine Verlängerung der Wirbelsäule in eine Caudal Appendix ist ja denn auch bei der menschlichen Species undenkbar. Erlauben Sie mir auch, hochgeehrter Herr Ober-Medicinalrath, Ihnen zu bemerken, dass Ihr hoher Name demnächst auf der geographischen Karte Australiens verherrlicht sein wird. Ich hoffe, Ihnen die weitere Mitteilung hierüber in wenigen Monaten machen zu können.

It may be of interest to you, noble sir, that the fable about the people with tails seems to be explained in a very simple way. Mr Goldie, who recently penetrated into the interior of New Guinea, has found out that some of the tribes there put on an artificial imitation tail for decoration, which stands in harmony with many other ideas of these savages: An extension of the vertebral column into a caudal appendage is then certainly unthinkable in the case of the human species. Permit me also, respected Senior Medical Counsellor, to remark to you that shortly your high name will be exalted on the geographical map of Australia. I hope to be able to give you further information about this in a few months.
