MS is a note by M on a file containing copies of two printed letters sent to the Victorian Government from London and forwarded to M by the Chief Secretary. The first is a letter from Joseph Hooker to Robert Meade, Assistant Under-Secretary, Colonial Office, announcing the publication 'of the seventh and concluding volume of the "Flora Australiensis"'; see J. Hooker to R. Meade, 24 July 1878 (in this edition as M78-07-24). The other is a reply to Hooker signed by R. G. W. Herbert. The file also includes a covering letter to the Chief Secretary from Michael Hicks Beach, Secretary of State, Downing Street, that concludes, ‘I request that you will cause copies of these two letters to be transmitted to Dr Von Mueller, who has rendered such zealous assistance to the undertaking’.
Returned with best thanks to the hon. the Chief Secretary for his approval of an abridged flora of Australia being brought out in Victoria
