Herewith, dear Major Pitt, I send my letter of grateful acknowledgment of the generous
manner, in which Sir Michael Hicks-Beach was pleased to recognize my cooperation with
Mr Bentham.
If I was wrong in adressing it direct to the Governor instead of to you, then you
must kindly excuse it on account of my unacquaintance with the official forms. But
as doubtless his Excellency will forward my reply in acknowledgment of the despatch
of the Secretary of State for the Colonies, I thought it best to send it to the Governor
under cover to yourself.

See M to G. Bowen, 17 November 1878.
I should feel indebted if a few words of my thanks were added also for the gracious
manner in which Sir Michael received and encouraged some of my last publications
Regardfully your
Ferd. von Mueller
