on the verso: ‘Donatia Novae Zeelandia | Otago mountains | 1878 | Petrie’.

I was pleasingly surprised, dear Mr Day,
to receive your kind letter this morning.
It was very kind of you, to think of me and my wishes of plants during your travels
and business engagements.

Day at this period, and Day was sending him specimens; see G. Day to M, 25 January 1879, and G. Day to M, 6 March 1879.
