The file cover records that the letter was written on 9 September, which was a Monday, and registered at the Chief Secretary's Department on 10 September 1878.

Is it too much to ask, dear Mr Odgers, whether I can get a copy of Mr Smyths work on the aborigines of Victoria. Many notes, particularly on plants in the work were communicated by me.

M contributed botanical notes to Smyth (1878); see B78.13.01 and B78.13.02. On 10 December, Odgers directed 'To be supplied' and the Government Printer, J. Ferres, replied on 21 December that the book had been forwarded to M.
