To the honorable the Chief Secretary.
Sir
I have the honor to solicit, that you will instruct the Gov. Printer to print 3000
copies of the work,
now by your permission under the press, on all the native plants of Victoria; this
number will enable us to provide each state-school with one copy and leave a sufficient
number of copies for sale, and also if desired for the Mechanics Institutes and free
libraries &c. It would in my opinion be a pity, if the types of a work like this were
dispersed with less than 3000 copies being drawn off.

See J. Ferres to M, 14 August 1878.
2
On 19 August 1878 the Under Secretary, W. Odgers, minuted approval of M's request.
This was noted by the Government Printer, J. Ferres, on 20 August. See also M to G.
Berry, 23 May 1878.
I have the honor to be, Sir,
your obedient servant
Ferd. von Mueller,
Gov. Botanist
