It is my pleasing duty, dear Dr Hooker, to offer to your well merited elevation to British Knighthood my sincere gratulation.

Hooker was appointed a Knight Commander of the Order of the Star of India on 2 June 1877 (Supplement to London Gazette, 2 June 1877, p. 3498). For a discussion of the circumstances and Hooker’s attitude to honours see Desmond (1999), pp. 250-2. See also Lucas (2013a).
May this mark of Royal favor bring happiness into your family and encourage you to proceed on your glorious path and may you long be spared to enjoy the reward of your long labours free from impediments envey and discouragements.
Regardfully
Ferd von Mueller
Sir Joseph Hooker
