28 July 1877.
To the honorable Graham Berry, M.L.A.,
Chief Secretary.
Sir,
I have the honor respectfully to enquire, whether there are any means available to
support me to a small extent in the heavy expenditure of getting printed an authorized
translation of Wittstein's Chemistry of plants,
which I have enlarged by notes of my own up to the researches of the present day.
A private firm has printed on my cost many sheets or rather several, but I see the
expense of the issue would be beyond my private means. It has occurred to me, that
your Government might be willing, to aid me in this important contribution towards
Australian science by purchasing hundred
copies at 10/ each (reduced price) for the public institutions of the Colony.

No such aid was forthcoming and M frequently complained thereafter about how much
this project had cost him.
I have the honor to be,
Sir, your very obedient
Ferd. von Mueller.
