Letter not found. The text given here is from 'The introduction of ornamental and valuable trees', a letter to the Editor by W. Lawrance (Argus, 24 May 1877, p. 6) discussing the introduction of Quercus aegilops. After quoting B76.12.04 on the utility for tanning and dying of the acorn cups, known as 'valonia', Lawrance wrote: 'With a view of being fully initiated as to the required culture, I placed myself in communication with Baron von Mueller, [letter not found] who with his usual courtesy most promptly responded furnishing the following particulars—'.
["I beg to advise that I found the valonia oak quite as easy to raise as the ordinary British oak," &c.; adding that acorns should be planted in small wooden boxes in good soil with sand at bottom to filter any excess of moisture, or in large earthenware porous pans, or on sheltered garden beds, and when the seedlings are about a handsbreadth high, then to be potted off, &c When attaining a foot in height they should be again trans-potted. At the age of one and a half or two years the plants would be fit to be placed into permanent situation.]
