Sir,
I have the honor to inform you, in reply to your letter of the 12 inst.,
that no savings can be effected on the small votes of my Department during this finance-year;
indeed the fund at my disposal is utterly insufficient to defray the rest of urgent
expenses for maintaining the efficiency of my Department, as may easily be perceived
by comparing the means of other Departments; hence I shall be compelled to meet many
urgent outlays up to the end of June out of my personal emoluments.
