M's signature is on a slip of paper cut from a letter and pasted onto the form. Presumably M had written to one of his correspondents requesting that Liversidge be nominated, but no letter has been found. It would probably have been written no later than January 1877. The certificate has been dated to the probable day of its completion, almost certainly at the rooms of the Society.
