That is, for B77.08.01, the work for schools that replaced the version aborted by MacPherson on 22 November 1876 (see Lucas et. al. (2009), pp. 37-9, and notes to M to J. MacPherson, 21 March 1876).
M's letter was returned to him on 25 January 1877, minuted by MacPherson: ‘I dont know such a work is going on’. M responded to MacPherson’s minute on 29 January and was given approval for his original request on 1 February. M responded again on 7 February and was told the same day: ‘MS can be sent to Printer’. A request for an advance to pay for the engravings was made in M to J. MacPherson, 14 April 1877.
In his introduction M outlined the origin of B77.08.01 as a ministerial request that the publication of the planned volume, 'ready for comparatively cheap issue', be replaced by a smaller publication on Gum-trees, Wattles and other leading plants' (p. 4). No written stipulation of this kind has been found, but M evidently persuaded MacPherson to support the publication.
