M’s letter not found. The text given here is from Bulletin de la Société d'acclimatation, ser. 3, vol. 4, p 136. It is dated to December 1876 as the latest that it is likely to have been sent to Ramel in time to be reported at the meeting of the Society held on 23 February 1877. Ramel also enclosed a letter he had received from William Carson, Edward Wilson's administrator, supporting Ramel's suggestion that the absence of fevers, so prevalent in other hot countries, was due to the pervasiveness of
