Ich habe mich ausserordentlich gefreuet, sehr geehrter, Herr Dr Engelmann, dass Sie mich mit letzter Monatspost durch Ihre gütige Zuschrift ehrten, und mir auch Ihre wichtige Abhandlungen über die Eichen und Agaven sandten. Ich habe diese werthvollen Schriften bereits benutzt für meine "industrial plants", von welchem Werkchen gerade eine neue Ausgabe durch die Presse geht.
Ihr berühmter Name war mir seit meinen Knabenjahren bekannt, wie ich im Herzogthum Schleswig die westliche Vegetation zu untersuchen begann.
Ich selbst hatte Begier nach den Vereinsstaaten überzusiedeln, wie ich 1847 die Universität verliess, aber das Geschick, — keineswegs immer freundlich u in späteren Jahren mir abhold — hat mich nach Australien verschlagen. Ich habe ehrenhaft gestrebt, Deutsche Wissenschaft in diesem Erdtheil zu Ehren zu bringen, aber die Verhältnisse sind hier eigentlich für mich als Ausländer nie glücklich gewesen; ja mehr ich im Staatsdienst wirkte, ja mehr ware ich verfolgt; — ja mehr ich errang, um so mehr wurde ich beneidet. Mein Haupt-Lebensplan, die Universal-Flora Australiens zu schreiben, ging durch das Einschreiten von Bentham, der mittlerweise Indien u Central Afrika unberücksichtigt liess, zu Grunde.
Sie fragen ob Quercus hier repräsentirt sei; nein! — Ich habe mich getäuscht gefühlt in dieser Suchung sowohl in den Alpen Australiens, wo wir Fagus haben, als auch in den höhern Gebirgen Nord-Ost-Australiens. Papua hat aber bereits eine Art geliefert und vielleicht spielt ein günstiges Geschick diese Formen der Nord-Hemi-Sphäre vielleicht von den Alpen Neu-Guineas weiter in meine Hände.
Von den riesigen Liliaceen u Amaryllideen Ihres schönen Erdtheils haben wir nur in Doryanthes u Cordyline Repräsentanten.
Ich bin sehr begierig Notizen über die Nutzanwendung der verschiedenen Eichen, Coniferen &c Mexico's zu gewinnen. Können Sie aus dem reichen Schatze Ihrer Erfahrungen mir irgend Mittheilungen für mein Werk senden. Selbsverständlich erkenne ich jede literarische Gabe an. Oder können Sie mich an irgend jemand in Mexico verweisen, wo ich bereits Ehrenmitglied der Naturaleza bin, um technisch wichtige Beobachtungen, die dort über Holz, Fasern, Farbstoffe, Medicamente, Öle, Gemüse, Früchte, Futterpflanzen &c &c gemacht sein mögen, für mein Werk zu verwerthen. Was in der Mittel — u Hochzone Mexicos vorkommt, sollte doch auch hier einführbar sein.
Nun, edler Herr, nehmen Sie meinen Dank hin für die Ehre, welche Sie mir durch den braven Asa Gray erwiesen, die Briefwechsel, den hoffentlich lange bestehen wird, mit mir zu beginnen. Einige neue Schriften sende ich mit dieser Post an Sie ab.

I was extremely pleased, very respected Dr Englemann, that you honored me by your kind letter with last month's mail and also sent me your important papers about the oaks and agaves.

Letter not found; enclosed papers not positively identified, but see the collected papers in Engelmann (1887). Only the first part of Engelmann (1878) his major paper on oaks, had been published in 1876. Similarly, not all of his papers on Agave had been published by 1876.
I have already used these valuable writings for my "industrial plants", of which little work a new edition is going through the press just now.

Your famous name was known to me since my boyhood years when in the Duchy of Schleswig I began to examine the western vegetation.
I myself had the desire to emigrate to the United States when I left the university in 1847 but fate — by no means always friendly and in later years unfavourable to me— has brought me to Australia. I have honorably striven to bring honor to German science on this continent, but the conditions here for me as foreigner have never been really fortunate; the more I worked in the service of the state , the more I was persecuted; — the more I achieved, the more I was envied. My principal life-plan, to write the universal flora of Australia, was ruined through the intervention of Bentham, who in the meantime disregarded India and Central Africa.
You ask if Quercus is represented here, no! — I was mistaken in searching for this, both in the Alps of Australia, where we have Fagus, and in the higher mountains of north-east Australia. Papua has, however, already provided a species and perhaps a fortunate fate will further direct these forms of the northern hemisphere from the alps of New Guinea into my hands.
Of the giant Lilies and Amaryllis of your beautiful part of the world we have only representatives in Doryanth e s and Cordyline.
I am very eager to receive notes regarding the utilization of the various Oaks, Conifers &c of Mexico. From the great wealth of your experiences, can you send me any information for my work. I shall of course acknowledge all literary offerings. Or could you refer me to someone in Mexico

The Sociedad Mexicana de Historia Natural, the journal of which was entitled La Naturaleza. M was elected a corresponding member of this society in 1873; see Sociedad Mexicana de Historia Natural to M, 20 November 1873.
for technically important observations which may have been made there about wood, fibres, dyes, medicines, oils, vegetables, fruits, fodder plants, &c &c., that I can use for my work. What occurs in the middle and high zones of Mexico should certainly also be able to be introduced here.
Now, noble Sir, accept my thanks for the honor that you have conferred on me through the worthy Asa Gray, starting the exchange of letters with me that hopefully will last a long time. I am sending you some new papers with this mail.
