Office of Lands and Survey,
Melbourne, 13th. September 1876.
Sir,
I have the honor to acknowledge receipt of your communication of the 21st ultimo,
having reference to the proposals of the Honorable The Minister of Lands and Agriculture
in regard to the permanent reservation of the Royal Park, and, in reply, to state,
by direction of the Minister, that it is not intended to issue at present a Grant
for the site marked out for use of the National Agricultural Society, but, the Grant
for the Royal Park will be issued without delay.
1
See M to W. H. Archer, 21 August 1876.
With respect to the desire of the Trustees that, in case the National Agricultural
Society should at any time cease to exist, or fail to carry out its objects, the twenty
acres to be now ceded be not otherwise disposed of, but again become an integral portion
of the Park, I have to intimate that, in the event of such circumstances arising,
the matter will receive due consideration.
As regards the wish that the number of Trustees be limited to fifteen, it is not proposed
to increase that number, but it would be quite unprecedented to tie the hands of the
Governor-in-Council in the manner suggested.
The Minister considers that the Trustees request with regard to fencing the twenty
acres alluded to above, and to the present external fence thereof is fair, and has
directed that the same be forwarded to the National Agricultural Society.
With reference to the suggestion of the Trustees in relation to the Powder Magazine,
near the Flemington Road, I am to inform the Trustees that their suggestion, not being
one that this Department could deal with, has been forwarded to the Honorable The
Chief Secretary.
In conclusion, I have to mention that the Honorable James Service has been invited,
and has consented, to act as a Trustee, and will be appointed in the room of one of
the number proposed, now absent from Victoria.
I have the honor to be,
Sir,
Your most obedient Servant
W.H. Archer
Secretary for Lands.

For reply, see M to W. H. Archer, 16 September 1876.
Baron F. Von Mueller,
Honorary Secretary to Trustees of the Royal Park,
Melbourne.
