editorial addition. '9th August' is almost certainly intended. Surrounding letter-copies in the letter
copybook are dated August, which is also consistent with surviving related letters,
namely H. Read to M, 3 August 1876, and M to H. Read, August 1876 (in this edition as 76-08-00).

conveying information respecting grass seeds forwarded by the Government, and for
which the Council
beg to tender you their best thanks.

The Curator of the Botanical Gardens, under whose supervision the seeds are being
sown, has been instructed to proceed in accordance with the advice kindly tendered
by you.
I am glad to inform you that the seeds will have an excellent chance of germinating,
as a large portion has been sown upon an enclosed portion of land, containing some
194 acres, which is securely fenced and upon which no cattle are allowed to trespass.
