M was responding to the Council's having sent him samples of seed at his request; see M to H. Read, July 1876 (in the edition as 76-07-00b), and H. Read to M, 3 August 1876. The minutes record Council's decision: 'Ordered to be acknowledged and the Curator of the Botanical Gardens [Charles Scoborio] instructed accordingly'. For the acknowledgment, see H.
