The Under Secretary, W. H. Odgers, transmitted to the Warrnambool Borough Council
on 12 July 1876 three cases of seed procured by the Agent General in England, containing
grass and other plant seed thought to be suitable for arresting sand drifts. One half
of the seed was to be used by Warrnambool and one half by Belfast [Port Fairy]: 'I
may add that the Government Botanist has been requested to give the Councils the benefit
of his advice should they feel desirous of consulting him on any point'. The seed
included: 'Sea Lyme-grass Elymus arenarius, Moram or Bent Grass Psamma arenaria, Sand
Lupin Lupinus arboreus, Sand Lupin Lupinnus albiflorus'. On receipt of the seed, C.
A. Cramer, the Mayor of Warrnambool, noted that one of the packets received had not
been named in Odgers's letter, and one that was mentioned therein had not come to
hand (Warrnambool standard, 28 July 1876, p. 4).
In response to M's letter, the minutes record: 'Resolved on the motion of Cr. Hider
seconded by Cr. Harris, "that 7lbs each description be forwarded and Dr Mueller asked
to give any information he may have with reference to the "Arundo Arenaria"'. See
also H. Read to M, 3 August 1876.
