Endlich einmal wieder ein Lebenszeichen, edler Freund. Ich habe eben mit dem Dampfschiff Northumberland eine Kiste an Prof Dr Eichler in Kiel zu senden, u. darin ein Kästchen, welches für Sie 2 schöne Exempl. von Sphenodon punctatum

aus dem nördlichsten Theil Neuseeland. Dies Thier ist ausserordentlich selten u schwer zu erlangen, da es nur auf den kleinen fast unlandbaren und unersteigbaren Inselfelsen vorkommt.

Auch ein paar Gorgonien ex. sind aus Polynesien beigefügt. Endlich ist auch wieder eine Fischsammlung begonnen. Die Stockung der Sendungen entstand theils aus dem gänzlichen Mangel an Räumlichkeit u Einrichtung für selbst meine Amtsarbeiten in den letzten 3 Jahren, theils bei den zerrütteten Zuständen, in dem in dieser Colonie irgend eine Anstalt für eine Weile verfallen mag. Denken Sie nur an die Zeit der Commune jüngst in der hoch civilisirten französ. Hauptstadt. Im Staatsdienst müssen wir uns hier den Verhältnissen fügen, gerade wie im Militärdienst, während der letztere doch sichernde Privilegien hat.

Hospitalsmagd, von der Anstellung des Befehlshabers einer geographischen Expedition zu der eines Gartenburschen hängt hier fast Alles von politischem Einfluss ab, u diesem wird Alles geopfert, damit die Machthaber für eine Zeit das Land zu ihrem Vortheil ausbeuten können. Natürlich giebt es auch darin löbliche Ausnahmen. Mein jetziger Minister ist ein Mann von Bildung u gutem Character, so dass ich besseren Zeiten trauen darf, u damit mehr auch für Sie werde wirken können.

At last once again a sign of life, noble friend. I have just sent off a box to Prof. Dr. Eichler in Kiel by the steamer Northumberland, and in it a small box with 2 splendid specimens of Sphenodon punctatum from the northernmost part of New Zealand for you. The animal is extraordinarily rare and difficult to get, since it occurs only on the small almost unlandable and unscalable rock islands.

Also a couple of Gorgonia specimens from Polynesia are included. At last a collection of fish is also begun again. The stoppage of the consignments originated partly from the complete lack of space and accommodation for even my official work in the last 3 years, partly by the unsettled conditions in which in this Colony any kind of institution may decline for a while . Just consider the period of the Commune recently in the highly civilised French capital. In the state service we must accommodate ourselves to the circumstances, just as in the military service, whereas the latter do have protecting privileges.

From the appointment of a chief judge to that of a telegraph messenger, from the appointment of a Museum trustee to that of a hospital maid, from the appointment of the commander of a geographical expedition to that of a garden boy, almost all here depends on political influence, and everything is sacrificed to this, so that the rulers can exploit the country to their advantage for a time.
