Herewith, dear Mr Newbery, I send you back the specimen of clay containing fossil
leaves. I would advise, that drawings should be made of these impressions, so as to
be ready for publication, when at any time connectedly fruits and leaves, such as
these, are found. More than a dozen fossil plants are now known, so far as their fruits
are concerned, from deposits like these. Hence it would be unsafe to refer the leaves
to any one of these described genera and species from the material at present before
us.
