Letter not found. The text given here is from 'Giles' neueste Reise in Innern Australiens' [Giles’ latest travels in inner Australia], Gartenflora, vol. 23, pp. 381-2, the final issue of 1874. Regel was the editor of the journal. The article is apparently based on material received from M, possibly including newspaper reports as Regel's text is very similar to the account of 'Mr Giles's explorations' in Weekly times (Melbourne), 29 August 1874, p. 3, which begins 'Baron von Mueller has just received preliminary written information from Mr. Ernest Giles …'. The paragraph near the end of Regel’s account that contains the extract begins 'Unter den von Giles gesammelten Pflanzen hat F. Müller schon 15 unbeschriebene Arten gefunden und beschrieben. Müller schreibt uns,' [Among the plants collected by Giles, F. Mueller has found and described 15 undescribed plants. Mueller writes us:]
The letter is dated to October as the latest likely date that it could have been sent to have been quoted in the issue, assumed to have been issued in December.
The extract is followed by 'Ueber beide Genera will Hr. Baron F. v. Müller der Gartenflora specielle Mittheilungen machen' [Baron F. v. Mueller intends to give the Gartenflora special communications about both]. However, no item specifically on either of these genera has been found in Gartenflora. A full list of the plants found is given in M to Regel, October 1874 (in this edition as 74-10-00).
