Ich war sehr freudig überrascht, edler Freund, wie mir die letzte Monatspost nicht nur Ihren gütigen Brief, sondern auch das von grossherzoglicher Hand gezeichnete Diplom u das prächtige Ordensjuwel überbrachte. Ich habe durch den Kanzler meinen tiefgefühlten Dank Sr Königl Hoheit ausgedrückt, u nun bleibt mir namentlich noch die Pflicht, Ihnen als dem Originator diesen hohen u unerwarteten Auszeichnung meine Dankgefühle auszudrücken. Möge es in meiner Macht sein, mich Ihnen gegenüber thatsächlich dankbar zu bezeigen. Ich bedauere es sehr, dass mir weder in Blüthe noch in Frucht hier frisch zu Gebot steht. Ich habe den ausgezeichneten S. Kurz in Calcutta gebeten, Ihnen das nöthige Material in Alcohol zu senden. Ihre wichtigen Arbeiten werden helfen, den Familien, welche bei Jussieu als Apetalae u bei D.C. als Monochlamydeae ist naturwidrig zusammenstehen, die wahre systematische Stellung anzuweisen.

Kurz kann auch mithelfen das Material für zu liefern.

Wenn ich recht erinnere hat Hr Prof. Hegelmaier, ehe ich von Ihrer schönen Arbeit wusste, sowohl als A. rubra erhalten. Hier — weit südlich — kommt die letztere nur vor. Recht gern will ich Ihnen bei erster Gelegenheit die liefern, mehrere Versuche die Pflanze im Fruchtstand lebend nach Europa zu senden, habe ich bisher vergebens gemacht.

Die Entwicklungstadien der Blüthe u Frucht von wären leicht zu erlangen, u die betreffenden Schritte sind deswegen geschafft.

Ihnen u Ihren schönen Arbeiten auch weiter Erfolge wünschend, u bereit Ihren, soweit ich's vermag, dienstbar zu sein bleibe ich der Ihre

If I remember correctly, before I knew of your fine work Professor Hegelmaier received as well as A. rubra. Here — so far south — only the latter is found. I shall be happy to send you at the first opportunity; my attempts to send living plants in fruit to Europe have all been in vain so far.

The developmental stages of the flower and fruit of could easily be obtained, and I have taken the necessary steps to this end.
