Sir
I have the honor to inform you, that I proceed this day to the heath-country between
Port Phillip Heads & Geelong,
to examine cursorily the plants of this tract of country, which I have never yet traversed;
from thence I intend in a few days to pass on to the Lake-country about Colac,
to examine the waterplants for my works. Unless unforeseen hindrances arise I shall
be back in time for the work of the outgoing European mail.
I have left Mr. Luehmann in charge of the Department.

His intention to stay in the field until April was notified in M to W. Odgers, 23 March 1875, and his return in M to R, Ramsay, 7 April 1875. There are known letters for European correspondents dated 23 March from Birregurra (near Colac): M to J. Hooker, 23 March 1875 (in this edition as 75-03-23a); M to E. Strasburger, 23 March 1875 (in this edition as 75-03-23c). M to A. de Candolle, 23 March 1875 (in this edition as 75-03-23b), addressed from Melbourne was probably also written there. He presumably intended them for the European mail which closed in Melbourne on 28
March ('Post Office Notice',
Argus, 13 March 1873, p. 4).
I have the honor to be, Sir,
Your obedient servant
Ferd. von Mueller
The hon. Rob. Ramsay &c &c
