Haast joined his wife, Mary, in Melbourne, where she had been recuperating from a nervous breakdown following the birth of her fourth son (H. F. von Haast (1948), p. 682), on 26 February 1875, and sailed with her for NZ on 6 April. M's letter must have been written between those dates.

Ich vergass, edler Freund, Ihnen zu rathen, dass Sie bei Ihren jetzigen Spaziergängen von der Melaleuca parviflora Samen reichlich sammeln sollten, um solche auf dem sandigen Küstenland von Canterbury auszustreuen. Die kleinen Kapseln lassen sich leicht von den vorjährigen Zweigen abreiben. Wenn Sie diese einfach in Ihre Stube legen, so fallen die feinen Samen nach einigen Tagen auf ein untergelegtes Papier. Es ist noch ein zweiter Busch oder Baum bei Queenscliff auf dem Küstensand, der sich sehr zum Festhalten des N Z. Strandsandes eignen würde,: mein Leptospermum laevigatum. Er hat kleine eiförmig längliche Blätter, und die Samenkapseln stehen nicht in Reihen, sondern einzeln. Sie könnten ein Wohlthäter auch in dieser Beziehung für Ihre Inseln werden, wenn Sie den Samen in einiger Menge auch von diesem "sandstay" Busch mitnehmen, u gleich nach der Rückkehr an vielen Sandplätzen ausstreuen. Beide diese Pflanzen sind in meinen "industrial plants" mit notirt. Da es regnet schreibe ich heute morgen Briefe, u so auch an Travers.

Grüssen Sie Ihre Gemahlin, u erlauben Sie mir Ihr zu sagen als wohlmeinender Freund, dass sie als eine hochsinnige Dame eingedenk bleiben solle, dass sie als Gattin u Mutter Pflichten übernommen habe fürs Leben, welche sie ehrenhaft erfüllen müsse, u dass sie daher eignen Ideen ihrer selbst willen nicht folgen dürfe!

Donnern Sie nur recht oft zwischen meinen Mitkolonisten hier über meinen Ruin los; das wird schon helfen, und Sie können mein Departement wieder aufbeuen helfen. Dann hat doch ein F.R.S. sich für mich interessirt. Hooker hat bisher garnichts für mich gethan, so dass ich an andere FRS namentlich, Darwin, Owen u Balfour habe appelliren müssen. Ich komme auch dann mal nach Christchurch u sage Ihren dortigen Widersachern meine Wahrheit.

M was away from Melbourne for much of Haast's visit, collecting in Victoria's Western District (see M to W. Odgers, 23 March 1875). Presumably he stayed overnight at this hotel.

I forgot to advise you, noble friend, that you should collect seed in quantity from the Melaleuca parviflora during your walks now, to scatter them on the sandy coastal stretches of Canterbury.

NZ.

The small capsules are easily rubbed off the previous year's branches. If you simply place these in your room, the fine seeds will fall out after a few days on to a sheet of paper placed underneath them. There is a second shrub or tree near Queenscliff

Vic.

on the coastal sand that would be well suited to hold the sand on New Zealand beaches: my Leptospermum laevigatum. It has small elongate ovate leaves and the seed capsules are not arranged in rows, but singly. You could become a benefactor in this regard for your Islands, if you were to take with you the seed also of this 'sand-stay' shrub in some quantity and scatter it in many sandy places immediately on your return. Both these plants are noted in my 'Industrial plants'.

Give my regards to your wife and permit me to say to her as a well-meaning friend that, as a high-minded lady, she should remember that she has taken on obligations for life as wife and mother that she must fulfil honourably, and therefore she must not follow her own ideas for her own sake!

Go ahead and thunder loud and often among my fellow colonists here about my ruin, it ought to help, and you can thus help to rebuild my department. It means that at least one Fellow of the Royal Society has evinced interest for me. So far Hooker has done nothing at all for me, so that I had to appeal to other Fellows of the Royal Society, e.g. Darwin, Owen, and Balfour.

Haast was involved in a number of disputes at this period, ranging from allegations that he had been plagiarized (see Transactions and proceedings of the New Zealand Institute, vol. 7 (1875), pp. 531, 534-8), to the geological origins of the Canterbury Plains and Owen’s and Milne-Edwards’s classification and affinities of the moas, both discussed with his refutations in Haast (1874), his presidential address to the Philosophical Institute of Canterbury on 5 March 1874. He was also involved in administrative disputes over the future of the Canterbury Museum, among the tribultations discussed in chapter 53 of Haast (1948).
