MS black-edged. MS found with a specimen of Calocephalus lacteus (MEL 85097). Letter dated to early February 1875 on the basis that while M was in
Tas both in January 1869 and from 28 January to 6 February 1875, George Armytage arrived
in Melbourne on 10 February aboard the mail ship from England, R.M.S.S. Nubia (see 'Suez mail', Advocate (Mebourne), 13 February 1875, p. 4).

Baron Von Mueller
Dear Sir.
The accompanying plant is growing in large quantities at Ingleby, the property of
George Armytage who formerly resided at Como Sth Yarra, and now expected by the mail
from England. You would confer a great favor by letting me know whether this plant
is poisonous to stock and its Botanical name. — it is known locally as the Indian
mat weed and is likely to do much harm if steps are not taken for its eradication.
Stock do not like it and will not eat it, unless starved to it — any communication
addressed Ingleby will be thankfully received.
Faithfully yours
Edmund Hayes

I called on you but found you were in Tasmania
