Eben von einer Amtsreise nach Wilson's promontory zurück, theuerer Freund, habe ich
in Erfahrung gebracht dass der grossmüthige Kaiser Österreichs Sie in Anerkennung
Ihrer regen Forschungen durch die Ernennung zum Ritter des eisernen Kreuzes in den
Erbadel erhoben hat. Indem ich Ihnen zu dieser so wohl verdienten Ehre meinen Glückwunsch
darbringe, kann ich mir denken, wie sehr Sie selbst sich über diese Würde freuen u
so Ihre Gemahlin, da Sie Erben haben, welche sich bei jedem eignen Namenszug durch
Jahrhunderte des wackern wissenschaftlichen Wirkens ihres Ahnherres erinnern können.

Just returned from an official journey to Wilson's Promontory,
dear friend, it has come to my knowledge that the magnanimous Emperor of Austria
has raised you to hereditary nobility by designating you a Knight of the Iron Cross
in recognition of your diligent explorations. In offering you my congratulations on
this so well earned honour, I can imagine how very happy you yourself must be about
this title, and also your wife, since you have heirs who, with their every signature
for centuries to come,
will remember the scientific labours of their worthy ancestor.
