Es liegt mir die ehrenvolle Pflicht ob, Ew. Excellenz mitzutheilen, dass zwei wichtige geographische Landmarken in Central Australien, welche Mr Giles auf einer von mir hervorgerufenen Entdeckungsreise auffand, auf meinen Wunsch mit den hohen Namen des Grossfürsten Wladimir und der Prinzessin von Mecklenburg- Schwerin bezeichnet sind, da ich als geborener Mecklenburger ein bleibendes geographisches Denkmal der herrlichen Nuptialfeier zu setzen wünschte. Indem ich mich nun Ihnen ehrerbietig nahe, bittend, dass Ew. Excellenz diesen Ausdruck meines innigen Glückwünsches Sr Königlichen Hoheit dem grossherzoglichen Vater der Jung-Vermählten Prinzessin meines Geburtslandes überbringen wolle, möchte es mir erlaubt sein hinzuzufügen, dass wie gering auch dieser Tribut sein mag, so ist er doch ein bleibender , da nächste Generationen sich darüber noch freuen können, während dann die Gelegenheiten nicht mehr vorkommen werden, ein geschichtliches Denkmal eines hoffnungsvollen Ereignisses auf dem Felde der Geographie zu errichten. Diese Huldigung, die auf Ew. Excellenz Fürsprache der Sohn meines früheren Landesherrn herablassend hinnehmen mag, giebt mir auch die Gelegenheit Ihrem Souverain meine Dankbarkeit für ein Merkmal ermunternder Anerkennung, welche mir vor einigen Jahren zu Theil ward, ehrerbietig auszusprechen.

His Excellency the Minister President of Schwerin,

I have the honourable duty to notify Your Excellency that two important geographical landmarks in Central Australia, discovered by Mr Giles on an exploration journey instituted by me , were named at my request with the exalted names of the Grand Duke Wladimir and the Princess of Mecklenburg- Schwerin , because I, as a born Mecklenburger, wished to erect a lasting memorial on the occasion of the glorious nuptial celebrations.

In August 1874, Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich of Russia married the Duchess Marie of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. At M's request, Ernest Giles named a range of hills south of Lake Amadeus, NT, Schwerin Mural Crescent, and the principal pass traversing the range, Vladimir Pass.

While approaching you in reverence, I ask that Your Excellency convey this expression of my sincere wishes to His Royal Highness, the grand-ducal father of the newly-wed Princess of the land of my birth, and may I be permitted to add that, however small this tribute might be, it is yet a lasting one, as coming generations can rejoice at it when there will no longer be opportunities to erect in the field of geography a historical memorial of an auspicious event. This dedication, which the son of my former Sovereign may condescend to accept on Your Excellency's intercession, also gives me the opportunity to reverently express to your Sovereign my gratitude for a token of encouraging acknowledgement that was bestowed on me some years ago.
