in reference to oceanic depths between Australia and New Zealand. The soundings have gone to enormous depths, proving, as indeed might have been anticipated from the nature of the existing vegetation, that the two countries did not form part of one continent, as supposed by some naturalists; and the same may be said of New Caledonia, around which also oceanic measurements were instituted. Some extraordinary new creatures from the bottom of the sea have on this occasion come to light, including polyzoa of gigantic size and fossil type.]
