Letter not found. The text given here is from ' Mr. Gile s's exploratory expedition', Adelaide observer , 18 July 1874, p. 2. The article reports on what was known of Ernest Giles 's expedition, that his companion [Alfred] Gibson was presumed dead, and that Giles had returned to the Overland Telegraph line at Charlotte Waters. The expedition had commenced in August 1873 . See Giles (1875), vol. 2, pp. 27-68 , for the part of the journey with only Gibson as a companion, and the search for him with Tietk e ns and return to the Charlotte Waters telegraph station on 13 July, from where he immediately sent telegra m s to M ( E. Giles to M, 13 July 1874 (in this edition as 74-07-13a) ) and the Crown lands commissioner in Adelaide reporting his arrival. M's telegram to Krichauff must have been sent soon after receiving the news that Giles had returned.
[We may add that Baron von Mueller, of Melbourne, has telegraphed to Mr. Krichauff, M. P., asking him to arrange with the National Bank to place Mr Giles in funds to the extent of £100; and further, to request the Government to reward his services.]
