Es freuet mich sehr zu hören, lieber Herr Dr Haast, dass Sie bald Australien zu besuchen gedenken, und dass ich dann die lang ersehnte Gelegenheit haben werde, mit Ihnen persönlich bekannt zu werden. Seit man mir die Directur entzog u. sogar — ich bin ja ein Deutscher — auch die aller nothwendigsten Voten, lebe ich in einem kleinen Hotel, denn auch alle Gebäude ausser dem einzigen Museum-Zimmer sind mir genommen. So kann ich Ihnen dann freilich kein gastliches Dach anbieten.

Ich habe in den letzten Tagen einen Nachtrag zu den "select plants" ausgearbeitet, den die Acclimations Gesellschaft drucken lassen wird. Der erste Theil, die Nutzbäume enthaltend, ist längst vergriffen; der 2te, welcher die Futterkräuter Obstpflanzen, Gräser, medicinische Gewächse etc enthielt, ist auch nicht mehr erlangbar. So ist mir der Gedanke gekommen, dass eine neue Ausgabe, in welcher das ganze in Eins gereiht würde mit den neuen Zusätzen, erscheinen sollte. Da nun gerade diese Abhandlungen für den Gebrauch in Neu Seeland besonders geeignet sind, so möchte ich fragen, ob Sie hinlänglich mit dem dortigen Ministerium bekannt sind, um den Neudruck dort empfehlen zu können. Hier finde ich keinen Verleger, u Voten für solche Sachen sind mir nicht geblieben. Wie Mr Vogel hier war sprach ich schon darüber mit ihm, u er schien ganz geneigt zu sein den Neu-Druck dort zu veranstalten. Selbstverständlich erwarte ich selbst nichts weiter als einige Abdrücke. Sie können nichts Besseres haben, um dort industrielle Culturen zu fördern, u das Buch sollte sich sogar ganz gut aus der Regierungsdruckerei verkaufen lassen, soweit es nicht an öffentliche Anstalten vertheilt wird. Es sind etwa 300 Seiten, daher würde der Druck von 1000 Ex nur etwa £150 kosten u die Summe wäre wohl angewendet.

Mein Nachfolger ist ein junger ganz unwissenschaftl Gärtner, aber Vetter der Frau Ministerin.

Mary Haast had a severe nervous breakdown following the birth of her fourth son, Julius Hermann, in December 1873 (H. F. von Haast (1948), p. 682 ), and went to stay with her parents in Victoria, where her father, Edward Dobson, was engineer for the construction of the Geelong Waterworks. She arrived in Melbourne aboard Otago on 28 October 1874 (Argus, 29 October 1874, p. 4). Julius Haast arrived in Melbourne aboard Albion on 26 February 1875 to join his wife (Argus, 27 February 1875, p. 6) and he and Mary returned to New Zealand on Tararua, which cleared out of Melbourne on 6 April 1875 (Argus, 10 April 1875, p. 14) and arrived at Lyttelton on 15 April 1875 ( Globe (Christchurch), 15 April 1875, p. 2). There is no evidence that during this visit Haast met M, who was collecting in Victoria's Western District during March (see M to W. Odgers, 23 March 1875). If they did meet, it must have been before M left town, because the letter M wrote to Haast on the day the latter sailed for New Zealand implies that they had not met in the few days between M's return to Melbourne and Haast's departure (see M to J. von Haast, 6 April 1875).

Since I have had the Directorship taken from me, and even the most necessary votes — I am a German — I live in a small hotel, as all the buildings were also taken from me except for one single Museum room. Thus, of course, I can no longer offer you a hospitable roof.

In the last few days I have worked on a supplement to my Select plants, which is to be published by the Acclimatisation Society.

is no longer obtainable either. So the thought came to me, that a new edition should be published, where the lot would be enumerated with the new additions in one sequence.

As this work is particularly suited for use in New Zealand, I would like to ask you if you are adequately acquainted with the Ministry there to be able to recommend the new printing there. I can not find a publisher here, and no votes for such things have been left to me. When Mr Vogel was here, I already discussed this with him and he seemed quite inclined to arrange the new printing there. Of course, I myself do not expect anything other than a few copies. You could have nothing better to advance industrial culture there, and the book could even be sold quite well by the Government Printer, in as far as it it not distributed to public institutions. It has about 300 pages, thus the printing of 1000 copies would only cost about £150, and the amount would be well spent.

My successor is a young completely unscientific gardener, but is a cousin of the Minister's wife.
