M proposed Archer for the Linnean Society of London in his letter to Bentham of 21 March 1874, this date being a Saturday. Hence the present letter was almost certainly written on Thursday 26 March 1871.

i.e. Chevalier. This presumably refers to the papal decoration of Gregory the Great bestowed on Archer in 1870.
