Hochverehrter Gönner und Freund,

Soeben erreichen uns die ersten telegraphischen Nachrichten über die Vollbringung der sehr interessanten und wichtigen Reisen von Gosse und

Warburton, und ich habe in treuer Verfolgung der Australischen Entdeckungsgeschichte sogleich eine vorläufige Orientirungskarte dieser verdienstvollen Unternehmungen hergestellt, die ich Ihnen in einem ersten Abdruck beilege. Ihre so oft bewiesene Güte ermuthigt mich zu der ergebensten Bitte, mir gütigst eine Copie der Karten beider Reisen, sobald sie Ihnen zugehen, übermitteln zu wollen, um dieselben alsdann sofort in den "Geogr.Mittheilungen" zu veröffentlichen. Auch habe ich eine neue Ausgabe meiner Neunblattkarte von ganz Australien in Vorbereitung, in welcher es wichtig und gerade zeitgemäss sein würde, diese Reisen einzutragen.

Wie ich ersehe, fängt man jetzt in Neuseeland an, das Ihnen vor der Thür liegende Antarktische Meer auf Walfischfang auszubeuten, und in der Otago Times vom 2. Oktober 1873 soll ein Bericht gestanden haben über die erste von dort von Mr Printz im Sarah Pile unternommene Walfischfahrt. Sie wissen, dass mir die Erforschung und Verwerthung der Polarregionen am Herzen liegt, und würden mich daher zu Dank verpflichten durch gütige Mittheilungen über diesen begonnenen Walfischfang. Ohne Zweifel können Sie auch in Ihrer einflussreichen Stellung die dortigen Kreise zur energischen Verfolgung der Sache anfeuern.

Ich habe es mir zur Pflicht gereichen lassen, Ihnen stets Berichte und Sachen direkt zu übersenden, von denen ich glaubte, dass dieselben Interesse für Sie haben könnten. Eine der neuesten deutschen Unternehmungen auf dem Felde der geographischen Erforschung ist die Expedition in die Libysche Wüste, die erste der Art vom Vicekönig von Egypten ausgerüstete, die Deutschen anvertraut wurde anstatt wie bisher Franzosen und Engländern. Ich beehre mich, den ersten Bericht darüber Ihnen anbei zu übersenden, und indem ich Sie herzlich grüsse, verbleibe ich

Just now the first telegraphic news of the successful completion of the very interesting and important expeditions of Gosse and Warburton are reaching us, and in faithful pursuit of the Australian exploration history I have immediately drawn up a provisional orientation map of these meritorious enterprises,

of which I enclose a first copy. Your kindness to me, so frequently proven, encourages me to humbly request that you will kindly send me a copy of the maps of both expeditions as soon as they become available to you, so I can publish them in the Geographische Mittheilungen as soon as possible. I have also a new edition of my nine-sheet map of the whole of Australia under preparation, and it would be important and timely to record these expeditions in it.

I notice that in New Zealand they are now beginning to exploit the Antarctic Ocean, right at your doorstep, for whaling, and there is supposed to have been a report, published in the Otago Times of 2 October 1873, about the first whaling expedition undertaken from there by Mr Printz in the Sarah Pile.

You know that the exploration and utilization of the polar regions is close to my heart, and you would therefore place me under an obligation of gratitude by kindly sending me reports on this newly commenced whaling. I do not doubt that, with your influential position, you could fire up your circle there to pursue this matter energetically.

I have made it my duty always to send you reports and articles directly, if I think they might be of interest to you. One of the latest German enterprises in the field of geographical exploration is the expedition into the Libyan desert, the first of its kind to be equipped by the Vice-King of Egypt to be entrusted to Germany instead of to the French or English as it has been until now.
