Melbourne
27/1/74.
Sir.
I have the honor to acquaint you, that I returned last night from my phytographic journey through the Hume-River

It is uncertain what current name, if any, represents the stream M calls 'Hume River', see M to William Branwhite Clarke, 29 January 1874, and notes thereto.
district and adjoining snowy mountains, my return having been delayed for several days by the difficulty of crossing the alpine streams after the last heavy rains.

On 31 December 1873, M received a free pass for a railway journey to Albury; see notes to M to J. Francis, 24 December 1873 (in this edition as 73-12-24a). He did not leave Melbourne until 6 January 1874; see M to R. Ramsay, August 1874 (in this edition as 74-08-00).
I had an opportunity to institute numerous observations on the Victorian plants of that district, which I had never visited before, and I have added also to our collections of new and rare plants.
I have the honor to be, Sir,
your obedient servant
Ferd. von Mueller.
The hon. the Chief Secretary.
