27/1/74.
Sir.
I have the honor to acquaint you, that I returned last night from my phytographic
journey through the Hume-River
district and adjoining snowy mountains, my return having been delayed for several
days by the difficulty of crossing the alpine streams after the last heavy rains.
I had an opportunity to institute numerous observations on the Victorian plants of
that district, which I had never visited before, and I have added also to our collections
of new and rare plants.

It is uncertain what current name, if any, represents the stream M calls 'Hume River',
see M to William Branwhite Clarke, 29 January 1874, and notes thereto.

On 31 December 1873, M received a free pass for a railway journey to Albury; see notes to M to J. Francis, 24 December 1873 (in this edition as 73-12-24a). He did not leave Melbourne until 6 January 1874; see M to R. Ramsay, August 1874 (in this edition as 74-08-00).
I have the honor to be, Sir,
your obedient servant
Ferd. von Mueller.
The hon. the Chief Secretary.
