Letter not found. The text given here is from Bulletin de la Société d'acclimatation, series 3, vol. 1 (1874), p. 133 (B74.02.01). It is dated to December 1873 as the latest likely date that it could have been sent to have been reported at the meeting of the Society held on 6 February 1874. Le profond intérêt que Votre Excellence a montré, comme président de la Société française d'acclimatation pour l'extension de la culture forestière en Algérie, me porte à vous faire observer que, sous vos auspices, un complément d'introduction de diverses espèces d'Eucalyptus pourrait avoir lieu, et que le gouvernement éclairé de votre nation pourrait procurer au zèle de M. Ramel une occasion de réaliser les projets qu'il a formés pour augmenter la production des bois en Algérie par de nouvelles importations de végétaux australiens.
Personne ne sait mieux que V. E. que c'est principalement aux efforts persévérants de M. Ramel qu'est dû le prodigieux développement de la culture de l'Eucalyptus dans votre colonie; mais, parmi les cent quarante espèces décrites par M. Bentham et moi dans le troisième volume de la Flora Australiensis, un grand nombre sont totalement inconnues sur le littoral de la Méditerranée. La territoire algérien est si vaste et la demande des bois de chauffage et de construction s'est tellement accrue avec la prospérité de la colonie, que l'extension de la sylviculture y doit offrir d'importants et durables avantages.
Ce serait aussi, de la part de votre grande patrie, rendre un légitime hommage au mérite de M. Ramel, que d'utiliser les dernières années de son existence et de le placer dans une position qui lui permît de consacrer toute son énergie à l'objet que j'ai l'honneur de vous indiquer.
Quant à moi, je procurerais successivement de nouvelles espèces d'Eucalyptus et d'autres arbres appropriés à votre sol algérien, qui, s'ils ne pouvaient pas croître avec la même rapidité que l'

The deep interest Your Excellency has shown, as president of the French Acclimatisation Society, in the extension of forest culture in Algeria, leads me to point out to you that, under your auspices, there could be a complement to the introduction of various species of Eucalyptus, and that the enlightened government of your nation could procure to Mr Ramel's zeal an opportunity to realise the projects he has concieved to increase the production of timber in Algeria through new importations of Australian plants.
No-one knows better than Your Excellency that it is chiefly to the perservering efforts of Mr Ramel that the prodigious development of Eucalyptus culture in your colony is due; but, of the one hundred and forty species described by Mr Bentham and me in the third volume of the Flora australiensis,

a large number are completely unknown on the Mediterranean seaboard. The Algerian territory is so vast, and the demand for wood for heating and construction has so grown with the prosperity of the colony, that the extension of sylviculture there ought to offer important and lasting advantages.
This would also be, on the part of your great country, to render a legitimate tribute to Mr Ramel's merit, that of utilizing his last years and putting him in a position that allows him to devote all his energy to the object I have the honour to indicate to you.
As for me, I would successively procure new species of Eucalyptus and other trees appropriate to your Algerian soil that, even if they could not grow at the same speed as
