Apparently in response to M's letter, the Secretary for Agriculture, A. Wallis, asked for a valuation of the library and any additions, as part of a discussion about whether the library properly belonged in the Botanic Garden or in the Government Botanist's Department; see W. Odgers to M, 4 September 1873 and notes thereto.
I have the honor to be,
Sir, your obedient servant
Ferd. von Mueller.
