Melbourne bot Garden
7/6/73.
To the hon the Minister of the Lands Department.
Sir
In compliance with your desire, expressed in a memorandum bearing date 2/6/73, but which I received only through the post last night, I beg to transmit to you returns of the distributions of vol. I and vol. IV of the Flora Australiensis, 30 copies each. I further submit a return of vol. V for 29 copies, one being kept by the Agent General for his Office in London. The distribution of vol. II and vol III, 30 copies each has been similar to that of vol I and IV. So I have not deemed it necessary to prepare a special return of these. The distribution in every instance has been made entirely under the authority of the then Minister of the Department in his own handwriting .
It is right for me to remark, that Mr Bentham did not offer the 30 volumes to the Vict. Government as an equivalent for the contribution of £100 - - towards the expenses of each volume; but that the financial support of such an important and expensive work was sought from the various Australian Governments chiefly with an object, that each volume might be issued at a comparatively cheap rate, and might thus become wider circulated for the benefit of Australia, than would otherwise have been possible.
I have the honor to be, Sir, your obedient servant
Ferd. von Mueller,
Direct. botan Garden

On 11 June 1873 Casey asked: 'Let me have the reply the Govt Botanist sent to me when I asked for a copy of all his published works at expense of Govt or to which the Govt had contributed'. The letter making this request has not been found but see M to Casey, 11 December 1872 (In this edition as 72-12-11a). The file is annotated: 'Letter herewith. A. R. Wallis 13.6.73'.
