Sir
I have the honor to inform you, that in accordance with your approved requisition this day nine (9) volumes of my works have been received from the Gov. Printing Office for Signor Zanardini of Venice in return for the valuable sending of books of that savants own researches.
1
See M's requisition in M to J. Casey, 13 May 1873.
The nine Victorian Volumes will be transmitted to day in compliance with your order to Signor Branchi, His Ital. Majestys Consul for Victoria, to whom, I understand, a direct letter on this counter donation will be sent from the Lands Department.

On 9 June 1873, the Secretary of Agriculture, A. Wallis, referred M's letter to C. Hodgkinson: 'The Honble The President decided that the works in question should be forwarded to Signor Zanardini through the Italian Consul, and that they should be accompanied by a letter informing Signor Zanardini that the volumes in question were a donation from the Victorian Govt in recognition for the works presented by him to the library of the Botanical Garden'. Hodgkinson responded on 10 June: 'If Mr Wallis has not already carried out the decision of the Honble The President he is requested to do so, and inform the Govt Botanist accly'.
On 17 June Wallis minuted: 'The Govt Botanists request received the approval of the Honble The President, and the books in question have since been forwarded to Signor Zanardini through Signor Branchi His Italian Majesty's Consul General for Victoria'.
