On 13 May 1873 Joseph Goode, Honorary Secretary, Union Church, Wattle Tree Road, Gardiner, wrote to Casey: 'I had the honor a few weeks ago to apply on behalf of the Gardiner Union Church to Dr Mueller Curator of the Botanical Gardens for a supply of a few trees and shrubs for the purpose of planting the Church grounds (vide list in margin). [4 Cupresseformis (Murray pine) 4 Pinus Insignus 4 Funebris (Funeral Cypress) 8 Cupressus Lambertiana 4 Ficus macrophiliea] A promise was given that they would be supplied if called for in the first week in May. A member of Committee of the Church called accordingly and was informed that it was necessary that the consent of the Head of the Department be obtained and that the application would be forwarded for your consent. | I have now the honor on behalf of the Church to apply formally for your sanction and trust that this application will receive a favorable and early reply, as the season is now advancing and the Committee are anxious that the Tress should be planted before the wet season sets in' (I73/9270, unit 750, VPRS 44/P, Public Record Office, Victoria). M was required to resubmit all such requests on the new form that had been devised for this purpose.
