Friday
The very few men, left me in the Garden, dear Sir Redmond, are required to day to clear up a little for Queensbirthday & Sunday. But so far as my ruinously reduced means will admit of it (we cannot even keep down the weeds) your application for plants again shall have my attention any early morning hour next week.

MS annotation by R. Barry on 22 May: 'To the Registrar Please order Elliott [Alexander Elliott, head gardener] to make his arrangements to call on Dr Mueller on Tuesday next May 27. with a cart at 9 AM'. The date of Barry's note reveals, by implication, the date on which M's letter was written. '23rd May 1873' has been written at the top of the letter in an unknown hand; this will be the date on which it was received, with Barry's annotation, at the University Registrar's Office.
I trust that this time my help after so many years will be for the benefit of my Department publicly acknowledged.
