Sir
I have the honor to inform you, that I have this day received from Signor Zanardini
of Venice, one of my Italian scientific Correspondents, four of his costly illustrated
volumes on Mediterranean Seaplants, which valuable donation I have deposited in the
Library of my Department.
I have now the honor to recommend, that a return gift may be rendered to this generous
and celebrated savant by sending him on behalf of the Victorian Government my own
here published works in return, and accordingly submit a requisition for your consideration.
1
The library at MEL has three of Zanardnini's publications on Mediterranean algae,
Zanardini (1842), Zanardini (1847), and the first two vols of Zanardini (1860-74). However the copies of Zanardini (1842) and Zanardini (1847) are photocopies, so cannot be items given to M. The library also holds Zanardini (1858) and Zanardini (1872) which both, although they do not match the geographic description, include plates. The first volume of Zanardini (1860-74) and the copy of Zanardini (1872) have inscriptions
from Zanardini to M.
2
The books were delivered to M; see M. to J Casey, 30 July 1873 (in this edition as 73-05-30a) and notes thereto.
I have the honor to be your obedient Servant
Ferd. von Mueller,
Direct. botan Garden
The hon. the Minister of Lands.
