Melbourne bot Garden,
7/5/73.
The regulations, dear Mr Fitzgibbon, under which I have for so very many plants distributed
with so much satisfaction to the country are cancelled last week.
You must kindly therefore allow me to let the supply for Carlton Park (I don't call
it a garden) to stand over
until some new satisfactory arrangement is made about the supply of plants.
1
M was informed on 3 May 1873 (in a letter not found) that new arrangements were to
be made so that 'the distribution of all plants trees & seeds from the Botanical Gardens
should be subject to the approval of the Minister Responsible to Parliament for the
time being administering the Dept.' See M to J. Casey, 26 April 1873, and notes thereto.
2
Requested in E. FitzGibbon to M, 5 May 1873. MS file annotation: 'H C [Health Committee] 12/5/73 Regulation prevents giving trees'.
3
Supply was later approved, probably among the applications for supply submitted to A. Wallis for approval and referred back for further information. A. Wallis to M, 17 May 1873 (in this edition as 73-05-17c), and M to E. FitzGibbon, 21 May 1873
reported that the requested plants could now be supplied. For an example of the form
required to be completed for approval, see M to J. Casey, 22 May 1873 (in this edition as 73-05-22k).
Regardfully your
Ferd. von Mueller
