Mit dieser Monatspost, edler Freund, sende Ich Ihnen die Landkarte von Giles letzter Reise, auf welcher Sie den kleinen Fluss, den ich Ihnen gewidmet auch aufgezeichnet finden. Mit grosser Mühe habe ich £350 zusammen gebracht von mir befreundeten Colonisten für die Weiterförderung von Giles Reisen, u die Regierung Südaustraliens hat £250 hergegeben als eine Anerkennung der bereits in deren Territorium von Giles angestellten Untersuchungen u Vermessungen, eine Güte, welche ich von Sir Henry Ayres, dem dortigen ersten Minister persönlich erbat. So geht Giles — freilich mit dürftigen Mitteln — von neuem aus, u wird zuerst den Berg Olga untersuchen, dann die westliche Grenze des Amadeus See bestimmen u zuletzt die Quellen des Murchison Flusses zu erreichen suchen. Nach den vorliegenden Felsproben des Macdonnells Range ist es unerwartet festgestellt, dass die dort vorherrschenden metamorphischen Feldgebilde Gold führen. Mr Giles hat auch mehrere ganz neue Pflanzen entdeckt, die im 8ten Bande meiner Fragmenta ihre Beschreibung finden werden.

Mit dieser Post sende ich auch das Journal u die Karten von Hann der einen schönen Beitrag zur Geographie des äussersten Nord-Ostens Australiens nun geliefert hat.

Können Sie mir gütig noch einige Abdrucke Ihrer so vollständigen kleinen Universal Karte Australiens ablassen? Sie werden aus Giles's Diarien ersehen dass er selbige in Central Australien benutzte.

Ich habe manchmals gute Verwendung für einen Abdruck.

Ich bin Ihnen dankbar verpflichtet für die stete Güte, mit welcher Sie in mitten Ihrer vielseitigen Arbeiten meiner gedenken, denn ja fast jede Post bringt mir eine gehaltvolle Schrift von Ihnen.

Mögen Ihre edlen Bestrebungen für die Erforschung des Nordpols u seiner Umgebung völlig mit Erfolg gekrönt werden.

With this month's mail, noble friend, I am sending you the map of Giles's last expedition,

With great difficulty I have collected £350 from befriended colonists for the further support of Giles's expeditions, and the Government of South Australia has granted £250 in recognition of the explorations and surveys already carried out by Giles in their territory, a kindness that I requested from Sir Henry Ayres, the Premier there, personally. So Giles will depart again, — though admittedly with scanty means, — and will first of all explore Mount Olga,

then determine the western limits of Lake Amadeus, and finally attempt to reach the sources of the Murchison River.

that the predominant metamorphic rock formations there bear gold. Mr Giles has also discovered some completely new plants that will be described in the 8th volume of my Fragmenta.

M described several species in Volume 8, and more in Volume 9, in their appropriate systematic contexts. For a list of species associated with the exploration, see B73.04.01; B75.04.08 contains a list of plants collected on this and other journeys by Giles, with references to the Fragmenta.

I am also sending you with this mail the diary and maps of Hann, who now has provided a fine contribution to the geography of the farthest north-east of Australia.

In 1872 William Hann led an expedition to explore the interior of the Cape York Peninsula, Qld. In Petermanns geographische Mittheilungen, vol. 20, 1874, p. 233, Petermann summarized Hann (1873), a reprint of the 1873 Queensland Parliamentary paper, 'Copy of the diary of the Northern Expedition under the leadership of Mr. William Hann'. Could you be so kind as to let me have a few more copies of your so complete little universal map of Australia?

You will see from Giles's diaries that he used it in Central Australia. I often have good use for a copy.
