I am much interested in the notice
of the plants of Kilimanjaro, dear Professor Balfour, as I worked on the alpine vegetation
of Australia. Will any publication of this rare alpine treasure soon appear? Thanking
you for your kind continuance of sending prints I remain your regardful

A clipping from the Journal of Botany, British and Foreign, new series, vol. 2, 1873, containing a report of the meeting of the Botanical Society
of Edinburgh on 12 December 1872, is bound with this letter. The meeting heard that
' Dr. John Kirk, Zanzibar, presented to the University [of Edinburgh] Herbarium a
collection of dried plants from the highest zone of vegetation in the Kilimanjaro,
below the line of perpetual snow that crowns the summit' (p. 94).
