Es mag Ihnen erinnerlich sein, edler Freund, dass ich im vorigen Jahr den Plan entwarf
zu einer geographischen Reise von den central-australischen Telegraph Stationen nach
den Quellen des Murchison-Flusses. Als erstes Resultat dieser grossentheils auf Kosten
des Führers u meinerselbst unternommenen Reise sende ich Ihnen Mr Giles treffliche
Kartenskizze, bis ich eine bessere in Druck zu liefern vermag. Das Journal dieses
ausgezeichneten Forschers, der Schwierigkeiten zu bekämpfen hatte, welche seit den
Zeiten von Eyre u Sturt nicht mehr vorgekommen sind, wird schwerlich vor dem Abgang
der Monatspost im Druck erscheinen, muss also im nächsten Monat gesandt werden. Ich
habe die Diarien der Regierung Südaustraliens zur Veröffentlichung übermacht.
Was mich besonders antreibt, vor Sie hin zutreten, ist mein Wunsch die Genehmigung
Ihrer Königlichen Herrscherin zu erwirken, dass der hohe isolirte Berg im Süden des
grossen Salzsees (Amadeus-Lake) den Namen Olga trage. Ich möchte damit demuthsvoll
meine Dankbarkeit in doppelter Weise an den Tag legen, indem ich von dem Königlichen
Gemahl meiner hohn
Erbwürde theilhaft ward u weil ich auch dem kaiserlichen Bruder der Königin Olga tief
verpflichtet bin für das Geschenk von drei herrlichen Cabinet Stücken aus verarbeitetem
sibirischen Jaspis.

Olga statt finden.

incomplete publications (for journal), and enclosed the letter to [Jules Rebmane] in [Karathia], Viti Island [i.e. Viti Levu, Fiji]. In a letter of 26 April the completion

You may remember, noble friend, that last year I drew up a plan for a geographical
expedition from the Central Australian telegraph stations to the sources of the Murchison
River.
As a first result of this journey, financed largely by the leader
and myself, I am sending you Mr Giles's admirable sketch map, until I am able to supply a better one in print.
The diary of this excellent explorer, who had to battle against difficulties as have
not been known since the times of Eyre and Sturt, is not likely to appear in print
before the departure of the monthly mail, and will therefore have to be sent next
month. I have given the diaries to the South Australian Government for publication.

Giles's journal was made available to the press by the SA Commissioner of Crown Lands
and long extracts were published in the
Advertiser
(Adelaide), 1 February 1873, p. 2, continued 3 February, p. 2. The complete journal
was published in Melbourne; see Giles (1875).
What specifically prompts me to contact you is my wish, to obtain the permission of
your Sovereign Royal Lady, for the high isolated mountain south of the great salt
lake (Lake Amadeus) to bear the name Olga.
I humbly want to show in this way my double gratitude, as I received my high hereditary
rank from her Royal spouse, and because I am also deeply indebted to Queen Olga's
Imperial brother
for the gift of three glorious museum pieces crafted from Siberian jasper.

The continuation of the Giles expedition will be made from Mount Olga after Lake Amadeus
has been circumvented.

The two Royal names, as well as those of Liebig, Sonder, Zeil, Heuglin,
and a few others have been placed on the map by me.

King Amadeus of Spain (Lake Amadeus), Queen Olga of Württemberg (Mount Olga), Justus
von Liebig (Mount Liebig), Wilhelm Sonder (Mount Sonder), Count Karl von Waldburg-Zeil
(Mount Zeil), Theodor von Heuglin (Mount Heuglin). The features were named by Giles
at M's request. The surveyor Charles Birch had at roughly the same time, no doubt
also at M's request, attached the names Mt Zeil and Mt Heuglin to features he discovered
in central Qld; see C. Birch to M, January 1872 (in this edition as 72-01-00a). While Birch's names were included in Petermann's map 'Süd-ost-Australien' that accompanied the article 'Neueste Veränderungen der Karte von Südost-Australien'
in
Petermann's geographische Mittheilungen, 1873, p. 414-8 (digitized by the National Library of Australia at http://nla.gov.au/nla.obj-232433873), they do not appear on modern maps of Qld.
