Letter not found. The text given here is from 'A new and valuable work', California farmer and journal of useful sciences, 19 September 1872, p. 76. It is dated to August 1872 as the latest likely date that it could have been sent to be mentioned in this issue of the newspaper.
[We have received from Baron Ferd. von Mueller the distinguished Botanist and Director of the Botanical Gardens at Melbourne, Australia, a very valuable Volume "The Select Plants," (exclusive of Timber Trees) readily eligible for Victorian Industrial Culture, with indications of their native countries and some of their uses.

This is a most valuable publication of nearly 200 pages, comprising an extensive list of Trees and Plants, carefully and scientifically described, a work that reflects high honor upon the author, a work that will prove of great value to all who are fortunate enough to secure it.
We have carefully examined the Volume, and shall take pleasure in giving from its pages a series of extracts that will be found valuable.
We return our grateful thanks for this valuable work.
